THE SIERRA LEONE CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY (SLCAA) PROUDLY ANNOUNCES A LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT UNDER THE VISIONARY LEADERSHIP OF DIRECTOR GENERAL MUSAYEROH BARRIE: THE SUCCESSFUL REINTRODUCTION OF THE NATIONAL FLAG CARRIER, AIR SIERRA LEONE, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COUNTRY’S FIRST-EVER DIRECT AIR ROUTE BETWEEN FREETOWN AND LONDON GATWICK.

THE SIERRA LEONE CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY (SLCAA) PROUDLY ANNOUNCES A LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT UNDER THE VISIONARY LEADERSHIP OF DIRECTOR GENERAL MUSAYEROH BARRIE: THE SUCCESSFUL REINTRODUCTION OF THE NATIONAL FLAG CARRIER, AIR SIERRA LEONE, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COUNTRY’S FIRST-EVER DIRECT AIR ROUTE BETWEEN FREETOWN AND LONDON GATWICK.

This historic development marks a transformative moment in Sierra Leone’s aviation and economic trajectory. The launch of Air Sierra Leone is not only a symbol of national pride but also a bold reaffirmation of the country’s commitment to expanding global connectivity. The Freetown–Gatwick direct route is a strategic move designed to improve accessibility for the Sierra Leonean diaspora, boost tourism, and open new pathways for trade and investment with the United Kingdom.

In her remarks, Director General Barrie expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Sierra Leone, international aviation partners, and the dedicated SLCAA team for their unwavering support. “This milestone goes beyond aviation,” she stated. “It’s about creating jobs, building national capacity, and positioning Sierra Leone as a modern hub for air transport in West Africa.”

Speaking with the Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), DG Barrie highlighted the significance of this unprecedented route. “This connection is a big deal—not just for Sierra Leone, but for the global aviation community. It reinforces the ICAO vision that no country should be left behind when it comes to air transport.”

In response, the ICAO Secretary General commended DG Barrie’s bold leadership, emphasizing her dedication to enhancing the technical capabilities of the SLCAA team and putting focus where it truly matters.

DG Barrie further emphasized the long-term value of this route, stating, “Direct connectivity between the UK and Sierra Leone unlocks vast opportunities—strengthening trade cooperation, deepening bilateral relationships, and showcasing the true transformative power of air transport.”

 

The launch of the direct route and national airline is aligned with SLCAA’s broader strategic vision to promote safety, sustainability, and innovation in the aviation sector. SLCAA remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the growth of civil aviation in Sierra Leone and will continue to work closely with stakeholders to uphold the highest standards in air travel.
