SLCAA CONDUCTS TRIALS OF SIMFOX SYSTEM FOR AVIATION SECURITY SCREENERS AT FREETOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), in its role as the nation’s authority on aviation security, has commenced the trial phase of the SIMFOX (Simulator for X-ray Operators) system to enhance the competencies of aviation security (AVSEC) screeners. This initiative, which began on Monday, 17th February 2025, involves over 120 AVSEC screeners at Freetown International Airport and aims to ensure that all personnel are certified to perform their duties effectively, in line with international standards.

The trials are in compliance with the National Civil Aviation Security Certification Programme, which mandates the certification of all aviation security screeners, as well as Annex 17, Standard 3.4.4. This standard requires that all screening personnel be certified according to national aviation security programmes, ensuring consistent and reliable performance standards across the board.

Objective of the SIMFOX Trials

The primary goal of these trials is to provide participants with hands-on training to enhance their practical skills and familiarity with the SIMFOX system. The system is designed to improve the proficiency of screeners in detecting potential threats and enhancing their overall performance during security screening operations.

Upon the conclusion of the trials, participants will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the SIMFOX system and its applications, equipping them to:

Effectively utilize the SIMFOX system during screening operations.

Train new AVSEC screeners, thus contributing to the continuous strengthening of the workforce’s overall competency.

Structured Training and Knowledge Acquisition

The trials incorporated a series of structured exercises, designed to reinforce participants’ understanding of the SIMFOX system’s capabilities. These sessions emphasized the importance of regular practice to maintain proficiency and ensure that screeners are well-prepared to handle diverse security scenarios.

Facilitators during the trials stressed that consistent engagement with the system is crucial for developing the skill sets necessary to address the growing challenges of aviation security. This practical, hands-on training approach ensures that screeners not only become proficient in using the technology but also in understanding its real-world application in screening operations.

A Step Towards Enhanced Security Standards

The successful implementation of the SIMFOX trials marks a significant step forward in bolstering aviation security screening operations at Freetown International Airport. This initiative highlights SLCAA’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve the capabilities of aviation security personnel, ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet international security standards.

By providing training that integrates technology-driven solutions, SLCAA is setting the stage for enhanced aviation security in Sierra Leone, making it a model of preparedness and excellence in the field of aviation security.
