DG MUSAYEROH BARRIE CHAMPIONS CIVIL AVIATION EXCELLENCE AT AFI WEEK 2025.

Sierra Leone’s drive toward civil aviation excellence took center stage during the 2025 AFI Aviation Week, where Ms. Musayeroh Barrie, Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), reaffirmed the country’s reformed and strategic approach to aviation governance and connectivity.

As part of Sierra Leone’s growing collaboration with international aviation bodies, the DG led the signing of the Civil Aviation Master Plan with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This landmark agreement signals a deepening relationship between Sierra Leone and ICAO, solidifying the country’s commitment to international aviation standards, safety, and sustainable growth.

In addition to formal engagements, DG Barrie held bilateral meetings with the Malaysian Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, where discussions centered on initiating direct air connectivity between Sierra Leone and Malaysia. These early-stage talks aim to boost economic, cultural, and tourism exchanges between the two nations.

DG Barrie also participated in a high-level panel discussion on gender equality and female empowerment in aviation, where she highlighted Sierra Leone’s bold steps toward inclusive leadership. She commended the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly President Julius Maada Bio, for his unwavering commitment to gender equity through the landmark Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Bill.

“Sierra Leone has been a fantastic example of driving gender-inclusive reforms. The GEWE Bill, which mandates 30% representation for women in key elected and appointed positions, is not just a law—it is a vision for the future,” said DG Barrie. “My appointment as Director General of the SLCAA stands as a testament to this vision in action.”

Her remarks resonated with attendees from across Africa and beyond, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s leadership in promoting gender equity in traditionally male-dominated sectors like aviation.

DG Barrie’s leadership and participation at AFI Week 2025 underscore Sierra Leone’s ongoing transformation into a regional hub for aviation excellence, regulation reform, and inclusive development.
